Camp Japan

August 3 2018
backyard

Join me as I explore northern Japan true 'roughing it'-style: by camping in the great outdoors. I'll be utilising a mix of local campgrounds, campervan sites, motorcycle camps, and finally, freedom camping when I have to.
My journey starts in Akita, heading up to Aomori before finally making the ferry crossing to the wild Hokkaido, famed for its volcanic landscapes and diverse wildlife. My goal is to capture Hokkaido's wilderness on camera, as well as attend several 'matsuri', Japanese cultural festivals, along the way.

Mission Underway

02/08/2018-04/08/2018: Campsite #1, Akita

Arriving late at night after much waiting between the irregular rural train service, I set up my first camp in the dark and sweaty heat of a humid summer night. Unfortunately the ground was a lot drier than my clothes at that point, and added with the fact that this was the first time I’d set up the tent in a month or so, it took a fair while. But we got there in the end!

Since there were no official campsites within easy access of where I wanted to be, I camped on the edge of an area of shared public land where local people could come to plant their own vegetables. Every morning I woke up to the sound of a few people chatting together as they went about their gardening nearby. None of them seemed bothered by my camping there, although for long-term camping it probably isn’t ideal.

Meet “Sleevee”!

This is Sleepy Eevee a.k.a “Sleevee”. We met one fated day two years ago on my first visit to Japan. As I gazed deep into Sleevee’s eyelids, I just knew it was meant to be. So I rescued her from the Pokemon Centre in Kyoto and ever since she’s been a loyal, if somewhat extremely chilled, traveling companion. You’ll spot Sleevee hanging out in the pics and vids of my camping journal/blog entries, not doing much of anything except providing good company and sleepy banter. Don’t be shy, feel free to say hi! You might not get a response though…
