Reef-building corals have symbiotic relationship with dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) that contain chlorophyll and associated photosynthetic pigments. Images of coral fluorescence can be captured in three colours with a multispectral camera: green, orange, and red. Analysing the natural variability in fluorescence intensity for a given species, as well as the differences between diseased and healthy specimens, enables the development of an index relating fluorescence to disease. (Kellogg & Zawada, 2009). Mitigation of impacts from coral diseases and syndromes requires better diagnostic techniques to detect the onset of disease. Ideally, these techniques would be rapid and non-destructive. (Kellogg & Zawada, 2009). Introduce an ROV system that would make it an ideal candidate for this work as they are highly adaptable.

Expedition Background

To develop and test a payload for exciting and imaging fluorescence in corals by means of a proxy for health. Working with Bristol University, Cabot institute, Plymouth Marine laboratory and Roddenberry foundation

This is great. We developed a UV light board for this type of imaging. I'll post more about that when we get it online and documented.

Would love to see how this develops! Never thought to use fluorescence as means of measuring expanse of corals.
