Expedition Background

The island of Gogland located on the borderline between Finland and Russia was inhabited since Prehistoric times. It has archaeological sites, two Struve geodetic survey points inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List, military fortifications, ship wrecks, two fishermen villages and some mysteries behind. All these is now left empty (or almost empty?)

We are 20 volunteers supported by the CSKA Expedition centre, the Russian Geographical Society and Goodsufing aiming to

*map cultural heritage of Gogland

*clean the trash left by previous visitors

*collect samples for scientists

*evaluate touristic attractiveness of the island

The project is implemented within the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative
