Driving the OpenROV Trident in the estuary. Visibility wasn't so good, and lots of new pilots made this more of an educational experience than an actual scientific survey. Glad to have so many new pilots though!

Expedition Background

Empowering Ocean Stewardship: Citizen Science at the Beach, will be held at Waddell Beach at Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz County. Through this day-long hands-on experience, participants in the Singularity University 2017 Global Solutions Program will:

Form connections with the notion of environmental stewardship focused on the oceans; Experience emerging and convergent technologies being applied to oceans monitoring and management; Explore current citizen-science initiatives that focus on oceans data; Discuss the future impacts on society of the growing threats to our oceans; Engage in critical thinking and ideation around applying exponential technologies to global challenges to the Earth’s oceans.

Activities will include:

Navigating an OpenROV Trident underwater drone; DNA sequencing with a handheld DNA sequencer (the MinION);\ Tracking marine debris (beach trash, especially plastic waste) through NOAA’s Marine Debris Program; Visualizing aquatic microbes, with microscopy support from the Huang lab at Stanford University, pioneers in imaging and cellular biophysics; Visualizing sand and plastic pollution at the microscopic level; Reporting whale sightings through Whale Alert in order to reduce the chance of fatal whale strikes; Recording observations on life in tide pools through; Contributing data on water color and phytoplankton abundance with a Secchi disk through and; Reporting observations on jellyfish through
